There are two main types of ovarian cysts:
Functional ovarian cysts which are the most common. This type is innocent and formed during your menstrual cycle and are only around for a short period of time.
The second type are Pathological cysts. These are the type that grow larger in the ovaries and are either harmless or cancerous.
